Thomas Coats Memorial Church

Caitriona Balfe was seen at this Grade A listed building in Paisley, in July 2019. Dressed in sixties-style clothing, she filmed some scenes, both inside and outside the church.

Sometimes referred to as the ‘Baptist Cathedral of Europe’ this impressive sandstone structure with its crown spire is much admire by locals and visitors alike. It provides a memorable focal point to the Paisley skyline. Unfortunately, it is no longer used as a place of worship, being kept going with the help of local groups and also being used for weddings and graduations. One upside of this is that it was available for use by the Outlander team on a sunny Sunday morning, and we will get to see the church’s splendour on our screens later in the year.

As well as outdoor scenes, driving up to the church, Caitriona was seen entering the church where the filming was set up to take place.

There is some discussion about the reason for Claire would be visiting the church. Some think it was for Frank’s funeral, while other are less convinced, suggesting that it may be a scene additional to the book story.
